Found this great walkthrough for detailing. Will edit post with comments after I get a chance to dig in.
Update: Took first read through, spent last few days detailing without this information.
Key Note: Whether you finalize as a Hybrid or complete "over-detailing" trace of the model, be very careful during the process. Set the 'Display Model' parameter to Halftone while creating detail so you always know when you are touching the model. When complete, either set to 'Normal' or 'Do not display' depending on the method you are using.

(In)dependent Views / View Settings
Problem: Enlarged floor plan view on a sheet kept losing it's view settings.
i.e. hidden elements & categories after saving & synchronizing later reappear.
Solution: Check dependency of that view, make sure it is INDEPENDENT.
How to check: Highlight the view name in project browser, look under 'Identity Data' in the properties dialog. If it is dependent view settings made in the plan it is referenced from will show up (vice versa).
How to change: right click view name in project browser, select "Convert to independent view".
